The expansion

GXO and Agility Robotics announced on October 26, 2026, that Agility's Digit humanoid robots will go into two more US warehouses, in Statesville, North Carolina, and Lebanon, Tennessee, starting in early 2027. They will handle repetitive material-moving work that supports e-commerce fulfillment.

What has happened so far

  • The existing site is GXO's warehouse in Flowery Branch, Georgia, where the companies began with a pilot in late 2023.
  • Digit has moved more than 100,000 totes there, working alongside existing automation such as conveyors.
  • Across Agility's commercial and customer programs, Digit has logged more than 65,000 hours.
  • GXO and Agility signed a multi-year robots-as-a-service agreement in June 2024, which they describe as the first formal commercial deployment of humanoids in live warehouse operations. The article did not say whether the new sites fall under that agreement.

Which robot

The new sites will begin with Digit 4 and move to Digit 5 once it is commercially available. Agility unveiled Digit 5 in September 2026, with design goals that include working closer to people. Agility's cloud platform, Arc, manages the fleet and connects the robots to warehouse operations. The robots are built at Agility's RoboFab in Salem, Oregon, which is designed for up to 10,000 robots a year.

Why it matters

Many humanoid projects remain demonstrations. A paid, repeated deployment with tote counts and hours is more informative. Even so, important numbers are missing: how many robots GXO will use, the contract value and how the cost compares with other automation. One analysis said the undisclosed numbers leave the financial case unproven.

What to watch

  • Whether the 2027 sites start on schedule and how many robots are deployed.
  • Safety results as Digit works nearer to people.
  • How Digit 5 performs compared with Digit 4.
