What meta tags do

Meta tags sit in the head of a page. They tell search engines what the page is about and tell social networks what to show when someone shares a link. The title and description often become the headline and snippet in search results. Open Graph and Twitter card tags control the preview card on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack and messaging apps. This tool builds all of them from a short form.

How to use it

  • Fill in the title, description and page URL. Character counters show whether each is a good length.
  • Add a share image URL (1200 x 630 pixels is a good size).
  • Choose the content type, Twitter card style, robots setting and locale.
  • Copy the generated HTML into the head of your page.

Recommended lengths

  • Title: about 50 to 60 characters. Longer titles are cut off in search results.
  • Meta description: about 120 to 160 characters. Write it as a short pitch that earns the click.
  • Share image: 1200 x 630 pixels, under a few MB, with the important part in the middle.

What each group does

  • Title, description and canonical: used by search engines. The canonical link tells Google which URL is the main one when several show the same content.
  • Robots: index or noindex, follow or nofollow. Use noindex only on pages you want kept out of search.
  • Open Graph (og:): the card for Facebook, LinkedIn and many apps.
  • Twitter card: the card for X. If Twitter tags are missing, X often falls back to Open Graph.

After you publish

Each page needs its own unique title and description. Duplicate titles across many pages weaken search results. Values are escaped so quotes and ampersands do not break your HTML. Test your link with the sharing debuggers of the social networks, because they cache old previews.
