What a slug is
A slug is the readable part of a URL that names a page, such as best-javascript-tips in example.com/blog/best-javascript-tips. A good slug is short, lowercase, easy to read aloud and made of real words. This tool turns any title into one: it removes accents, replaces symbols and spaces with a separator, and can drop common filler words.
How to use it
- Paste one title per line to make several slugs at once.
- Choose a hyphen or an underscore as the separator. Hyphens are the usual choice for URLs.
- Keep lowercase on, and turn on stop-word removal to shorten long titles.
- Set a maximum length if you want slugs cut at a word boundary.
- Copy the result.

- Use the main words people would search for, and keep it short, ideally under 60 characters.
- Use hyphens, not underscores. Search engines read hyphens as word separators.
- Avoid dates and numbers that will go out of date, and avoid changing a slug after the page is live.
- If you must change a slug, add a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
- Make each slug unique on the site.
